Officers gave the following account of events leading to Washington's arrest:
At 3:50 p.m., Washington, 31, of Buchanan, placed an order with a clerk for two bags of fried chicken.
His bill came to $1.62 for one bag and $2.38 for the other.
After the clerk handed over the chicken, Washington started munching.
When the store manager demanded payment, Washington just walked away.
A second request for money went unheeded and the manager called the police.
When officers R.L. Harman and D.G. Wiggonton arrived, they spotted Washington in the store still eating the evidence.
Washington was charged with concealing merchandise and was released on a summons.
Store Manager John Starkey, contacted at home, remained mum.
"I have no comment, sir," he said.
Washington was more congenial.
"I'm going straight home," he assured authorities as he left Roanoke City Jail.
He was last seen heading down Campbell Avenue.
