WYTHE DENIES FUNDS SOUGHT BY LAKE AREA

The Wythe County Board of Supervisors voted 4-3 Friday against providing $38,000 requested to keep the Rural Retreat Lake recreation area going.

"As far as what happens from now on, I really don't know," said Rural Retreat Town Manager Ray Matney, a member of the lake authority. "The lake authority is going to have to take a real hard look at what they're going to be able to do and how long they're going to be able to do it."

The vote split along party lines with Republican Supervisors Bobby Williams, Alan Dunford, Charlotte Naber and Tom DuPuis voting against the funding and Democrats Andy Kegley, George Johnstone and Sid Crockett supporting it.

The supervisors had asked the authority to conduct an audit and, after that was done, to revise its proposed operating budget. Matney said the authority complied with all those requests, but still did not get the money it sought.
