CZARKOWSKI, PILOTS' DEFENSE SHUT DOWN BUCS 4-1

The Salem Buccaneers had a number of good scoring opportunities Saturday night at Municipal Field, but each time they got in a position to make something happen, pitcher Mark Czarkowski and the Peninsula Pilots' defense wouldn't give up the hit.

Czarkowski pitched a complete game as the Pilots beat Salem 4-1 in Carolina League baseball.

Although the Bucs out-hit the Pilots nine to six, Czarkowski (3-1) was backed by a solid defense that recorded 22 ground-ball putouts, including two double plays that ended scoring threats.

"[Czarkowski] did a good job," said Stan Cliburn, the Bucs manager. "He kept the ball down and got those ground balls. We had some chances early and didn't capitalize, but when a guy pitches that good, and the defense behind is going to make the plays, it's tough to get things."

Peninsula scored its first run off Bucs starter Tim Wakefield (4-8) without a hit. After the Bucs tied the score 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Pilots scored three in the fifth to make it 4-1.

The key blow was a two-run homer over the right-field wall by first baseman Lash Bailey.

The Bucs had two on with two out in the sixth inning, but Chris Estep grounded out to end the inning.

In the eighth, Greg Sims and Bruce Schreiber led off with singles, but Czarkowski defused the situation by getting Mandy Romero to hit into a 5-4-3 double play, then ending the inning on a ground out by Tim Hines.

Wakefield yielded just five hits, but he had trouble controlling his knuckleball and walked five.

In the fourth, Bailey walked to start the inning, moved to second on a passed ball by Romero and moved to third on a wild pitch. Bailey scored the game's first run on a sacrifice fly from catcher Jim Campanis.

\ BUCSHOTS: Bobby Underwood (1-3) is scheduled to pitch tonight as the Bucs open a three-game series with the Durham Bulls at Municipal Field.i
