MAN KILLED IN SHOOTOUT WITH POLICE

A man was killed in a shootout with pursuing Martinsville police Sunday afternoon after wrecking his car in Henry County.

Police are not identifying the white male pending notification of his relatives, Martinsville Police Chief Terry Roop said.

Sometime before 4 p.m., Martinsville officers were called to a residence over a domestic dispute. A man who was carrying a shotgun fled in a car, Roop said.

The officers chased the car into Henry County, where at the intersection of U.S. 220 and U.S. 58, it slid over an embankment.

As the three officers, who had joined in the chase, approached the car, gunfire broke out and the man was killed, Roop said.

Roop declined to discuss further details of the incident pending the outcome of a state police investigation.
