BULLS WIN SEVENTH STRAIGHT AGAINST BUCS

Suffice it to say the Durham Bulls have the Salem Buccaneers' number.

Durham third baseman Edwin Alicea led off the sixth inning with a home run to break a tie and three pitchers combined for a five-hitter as the Bulls beat the Bucs 5-3 in a Carolina League baseball game Sunday night at Municipal Field.

It was the Bulls' seventh win in seven meetings with the Bucs this season.

"They seem to always get the big hit at the right time. Alicea did the same thing to us earlier this year," said Salem manager Stan Cliburn.

With the score 3-3 in the sixth, Alicea blasted a shot over the left-field wall off Bucs starter Bobby Underwood (1-4). Three of Alicea's six home runs have come against Buccaneers' pitching.

Dan Snover followed Alicea's homer with a one-out double. After moving to third, Snover scored on a wild pitch by Salem reliever Tim McDowell to make the score 5-3.

Durham starter Pat Tilmon (4-5) gave up three runs over the first three innings, but then shut the Bucs out. He struck out eight and walked just one in seven innings of work. The Bucs got just one hit after the third inning.

Bulls reliever Scott Diez got the first two outs in the eighth inning, but walked Darwin Pennye. Durham then brought in closer Skipper Wright, who retired the final four Bucs to pick up his fifth save.

"[Tilmon] got stronger as the game went on," Cliburn said. "We couldn't get a thing going after it was 3-3. Once they got to the lead, Wright can close it out for them."

Durham led 1-0 after a half inning, but in the bottom of the first Tilmon hit Bruce Schreiber and Mandy Romero doubled him home with the tying run. Pennye's two-out double scored Romero and the Bucs led 2-1.

The Bulls went up 3-2 in the third, when Ryan Klesko hit a two-out single off Underwood to score Keith Mitchell and Brian Champion.

Schreiber singled to start the bottom of the third, then went to second on a wild pitch. Pennye's two-out single knotted the score at 3.

\ BUCSHOT: Paul Miller (5-2, 2.68 ERA) goes against Preston Watson (4-2, 2.18 ERA) as the Bucs and Bulls continue the three-game series.
