MISSISSIPPIAN TO PREACH AT MEETING

An internationally traveled evangelist, the Rev. James Lentz of Brandon, Miss., will preach for the 12th annual Robert Sheffey Memorial Camp Meeting beginning Friday.

Services will begin nightly at 7:30, preceded by a half-hour of gospel music. All events will be at the Sheffey camp ground near Wesley Chapel 20 miles northwest of Blacksburg.

Musical groups scheduled to perform are The Lupers, The Virginians, The Kingreys, The Revelators, the Rogers Family, Mike Fonderhide, Bond in Faith, The Kelleys and The Carpenter's Tools.

Services include Bible quiz programs for children of preschool and elementary school age.

The program July 12 will emphasize youth issues. Music director Fonderhide will present testimony on his conversion from drug abuse.

The camp meeting, which is open to those of all faiths, honors Robert Sayers Sheffey, a pioneer evangelist of the early 19th century to people of the Appalachians.

Sheffey, is the subject of a film, "The Saint in the Wilderness" which won a TV award 12 years ago.

Sheffey is buried in the cemetery at Wesley's Chapel next to the camp grounds.

According to Cindy Johnson, a supporter, the camp meeting association was formed in 1978 to support Southwest Virginia churches. Call 703-953-3417 for more information.
