The dead youth is Raymond David Helmick, 17, of Axton, said Cecil Handy, special agent in charge of investigations at the Salem State Police district.
Helmick was shot four times and killed by a Martinsville police officer after Helmick pointed a 12-gauge shotgun at the officer following a chase, Handy said. The officer was not identified.
Before the 3:25 p.m. shooting, the Martinsville Police Department had received a 911 emergency call of a domestic disturbance at the Park Street residence of a girlfriend of Helmick, Handy said.
Helmick pointed the shotgun at an officer who responded to the call and fled the residence at high speed in a car, Handy said.
The officer chased Helmick and was joined by two other officers in patrol cars. They followed Helmick south on U.S. 220 into Henry County where Helmick crashed his car at the highway's intersection with U.S. 58, Handy said.
As the officers approached the car, Helmick pointed the shotgun, Handy said. There were no witnesses to the shooting except the Martinsville officers.
Handy said the state police were continuing their investigation.
