BUMBLING BUCS DROP ANOTHER TO BULLS

The Salem Buccaneers lost manager Stan Cliburn on a first-inning ejection Monday night. It took them a little longer to lose their eighth consecutive game to the Durham Bulls.

Durham took advantage of six Salem errors, four by shortstop Rob Bailey, to score five unearned runs and beat the Bucs 7-2 in Carolina League baseball at Municipal Field.

The Bulls scored an unearned run in the first, one in the third and two in a three-run ninth inning as they dealt the Bucs (4-7) their third consecutive loss. Salem is the only team in the Northern Division not in first place.

With two out in the first, Bailey couldn't handle a grounder by Keith Mitchell. After Theron Todd walked, Brian Champion hit a fly ball that center fielder Greg Sims appeared to catch.

But as Sims started to run off the field, he dropped the ball and umpire Rick Smith signaled no catch. Mitchell and Todd came home on the play, apparently giving Durham a 2-0 lead.

Cliburn rushed out of the dugout and argued that Sims had caught the ball for the final out. He was ejected.

Salem pitcher Paul Miller (5-3) appealed that Mitchell hadn't touched home plate. Mitchell was ruled safe. Miller then appealed that Todd hadn't touched home and Todd was ruled out, making it 1-0.

After the Bucs tied the score in the bottom of the first, Durham went up 2-1 with an unearned run in the third and extended its lead to 3-1 when Dave Brust homered to lead off the fifth.

\ BUCSHOTS: Salem first baseman/outfielder Mike Brewington, who suffered fractures to his right upper jaw, cheek bone and nose when he collided with Chris Estep in Thursday's game, is scheduled to undergo surgery this morning at Lewis-Gale Hospital. Bucs officials said Brewington's jaw will be wired shut for about five weeks and he probably will be sidelined for the rest of the season.i
