LYNCHBURG SELECTS FIRST BLACK MAYOR

The Lynchburg City Council on Monday elected the city's first black mayor, 14-year council veteran M.W. Thornhill Jr.

Thornhill defeated Julian Adams by a 5-2 vote.

Thornhill succeeds Jimmie Bryan, who was mayor for six years. "I think the city of Lynchburg has grown and matured," Thornhill said, "but I always thought Lynchburg was the finest city in the world."
