UPDIKE AND JURY ARE CONGRATULATED

CONGRATULATIONS are in order for Bedford Commonwealth's Attorney James Updike and the jury who found Jens Soering guilty of the stabbing deaths of Elizabeth Haysom's parents, Nancy and Derek Haysom.

Like many, I followed this case from day one, and I find the perseverance of Updike, who worked on the case for the past five years, commendable.

It appears that Soering thought all the time that he could outsmart all the "yokels" back in Bedford County, but it appears the only one he outsmarted was himself.

Sad? Yes. Both Soering and Elizabeth Haysom will now sit out the rest of their best young years and wither away in the prison system. Such a waste of life and talent. RON PENLAND WYTHEVILLE
