John A. Martin of University City, Miss., will succeed Jill Graybeal, retired assistant superintendent for personnel.
He is the first black to be hired for a "cabinet level" position in the school system, according to Superintendent Harold Dodge. Martin will be paid $58,209 and will receive $3,000 for moving expenses.
Martin is the executive assistant for personnel in the University City school system, where he worked under Dodge, who was superintendent there before coming to Montgomery County in 1988.
Also at the meeting, Paula A. Burwell-Robinson was hired to be Christiansburg Elementary's assistant principal. She is the wife of Waide Robinson, Christiansburg Middle School's new principal. Her salary will be $39,084.
Burwell-Robinson has been a special education teacher and assistant principal in both Chesapeake and Henrico County.
Wanda Price will be Auburn High School's new assistant principal, succeeding Waide Robinson. Price has been assistant principal at Blacksburg Middle School for the past two years. She will be paid $41,879.
Also at the meeting, Mary Biggs, a teacher and leader of the Montgomery County Education Association, questioned the board's tentative plans for having student representatives meet with board members.
"We as an association would like to see the idea expanded to include teacher representatives," Biggs said. "The association feels strongly about the possibility of students having input without teacher input as well."
