RETIREES DIDN'T REMARK D-DAY

I THINK it is tragic when our newspapers and the Roanoke TV stations fail to remember June 6 as the anniversary of D-Day.

I live in a retirement center and asked several persons here if they remembered what day it was. None I asked knew. Did all our loved ones and friends fight and die in vain?

I agree with Robert E. Kesler (letter June 16). My late husband was in the 4th Infantry Division. He went into France on D-Day and fought through to Germany. He was wounded three times and awarded two Purple Hearts, but he came back home to always remember D-Day. RUTH J. SUMNER WYTHEVILLE
