Elder Robert Henry Houston Carter Sr. departed this life Tuesday evening, July
3, 1990, at the V.A. Medical Center, Salem, Va., after a long illness. He was
born June 2, 1917, in McDowell County, W.Va., the son of the late Elder James
T. Carter and Mary E. Guerrant Carter. He graduated from Kimball High School
in 1937 and attended South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, S.C. He was a
veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He was the founder of the Holy Faith
Church of God in Christ, Christiansburg, Va., where he had served as minister
for a number of years. He also served as president of the State Home and
Foreign Mission Department of the Church of God in Christ. His survivors
include his wife, Mrs. Flora L. Carter, Roanoke; one son, Robert H. Carter
Jr., Roanoke; three daughters, Mrs. Linda M. Bolden, Sacramento, Calif.; Mrs.
Phyllis P. English, Newark, Del.; Mrs. Twyla M. Bright, Roanoke; two
sons-in-law, John A. Bolden and George H. English; nine grandchildren; a host
of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
at the Garden of Prayer #7 Church of God in Christ at 3101 Cove Road, N.W.,
Roanoke, Va., with Bishop L.E. Willis and District Superintendent Shadrach K.
Brown officiating. The remains will be placed in the church one hour prior to
service time. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:00
at the Holy Faith Church of God in Christ, Christiansburg, Va. Burial will be
at Shafer Memorial Cemetery, Christiansburg, Va. Claytor-Alexander and Penn
Funeral Home, Radford, Va., is in charge of arrangements.
