CITY OZONE ORDINANCE TAKES EFFECT

Businesses that use ozone-destroying chemicals in this city known for its high-tech industries could face fines of up to $500 a day and six-month jail terms for their officers under a new law.

But many companies in this city of 90,000 people about 40 miles south of Los Angeles may avoid the restrictions.

"I'm expecting a fair number of exemptions, at least in this first year," Michael Brown, the city's environmental coordinator, said Tuesday.

The law prohibits companies from using or selling chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, and other chemicals that destroy ozone gas in the stratosphere about 30 to 50 miles above the Earth's surface.
