Wynne surrendered Tuesday to state police officers and was fingerprinted and booked. He was taken to the magistrate's office in Great Bridge and was released on his own recognizance. A date for the trial in Chesapeake Circuit Court has not been set.
The felony charge stems from a $1,000 check Wynne solicited as mayor from Sumitomo Machinery Corp. of America, and then allegedly deposited into a private bank account. If convicted, Wynne could be sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Wynne, 41, the city's first directly elected mayor, declined to comment on his indictment. His attorney, Franklin A. Swartz of Norfolk, said Wynne would plead innocent and would request a jury trial.
