WOMAN CHARGED IN DEATH OF BOYFRIEND

A 44-year-old Roanoke woman turned herself in to police early today on charges of shooting her 29-year-old boyfriend to death in the parking lot of a Northwest Roanoke nightspot.

Agnes Marie Basham of the 800 block of Hunt Avenue Northwest was charged with murdering William Robert Poindexter of the 2300 block of Orange Avenue Northwest after what police described as a "lover's quarrel."

Basham walked into the police department about an hour after the 2 a.m. shooting and turned herself in along with the gun used to kill Poindexter, police said.

Poindexter was shot several times in the chest in the parking lot of Omirr's, a popular nightspot in the 1700 block of Orange Avenue Northwest.

Police said the two argued in the nightclub and then left together. Moments later Poindexter was shot to death in the parking lot next to the nightclub. People in Omirr's heard the shots and rushed outside to find Poindexter on the ground and Basham driving off in a car with some other people.

The people she drove off with reportedly did not see the actual shooting, police said.

Basham was being held this morning on $10,000 bond.
