FAKE BOMB DIDN'T GET BY INSPECTOR

A cargo inspector at John F. Kennedy International Airport spotted a cache of bombs and guns before they were loaded onto a plane, but the weapons turned out to be fake, officials said.

The decoys, supplied by the Federal Aviation Administration, are used by Pan American World Airways to train baggage inspectors to detect the real thing.

The inspector was checking the cargo for Flight 403 to Florida on Wednesday when he spotted suspicious items in two boxes. Port Authority police evacuated the baggage room and notified the FBI and the police department bomb squad.

Police cleared the baggage room at 6:45 a.m. and it was kept closed until 9:25 a.m., when Pan Am officials told police what had happened.
