MASTERS VOLLEYBALL HONOR GOES TO ROANOKE MAN

Steve Palmer has become the first Roanoker to win All-American honors in Masters volleyball.

Palmer, 35, won the honor recently in the National Masters Vol Palmer leyball Tournament in Raleigh, N.C. The event drew 30 teams and included more than 200 players 35 and older.

Palmer played for the Washington Toad Ranchers. He was "recruited" to play in the tourney by a former Roanoke friend who was coach of the Washington squad. The All-American squad of 12 players was selected by the tournament coaches.

"Steve is an outstanding volleyball player," said Tom Blue of Roanoke, who is the commissioner of the Old Dominion Region for the United States Volleyball Association. "He is quick and has a sound knowledge of the game. He can jump and can do things in the air most players his age can't. His making All-American is an honor well deserved."

Palmer began his volleyball play as a youngster at the Central YMCA. He is a graduate of Cave Spring High School and Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn. While in college he competed in tournaments with the Knoxville, Tenn., YMCA. Since returning to Roanoke, Palmer has competed with the Central YMCA. He helped his Roanoke team win the National YMCA title and was named YMCA All-American in 1983.

He now plays for the Roanoke Sub Tech team and is employed by Time Technologies. He and his wife, Kelly, live in Southwest Roanoke County. -
