Mrs. Thelma Henderson Macom died July 4 in Rock Hill, S.C. She was born May 17, 1899 in Catawba, Va., the oldest child of Charles Robertus Henderson and Amma Abigail Henderson. After graduating from what is now Blackstone College in Tidewater, Va., Mrs. Macom moved to Pocahontas Co., W.Va., where she met her husband, Harry Fleming Macom. After Mr. Macom's death in 1930, Mrs. Macom obtained her teaching degree from Concord College in Athens, W.Va. and moved to Salem with her two children. Mrs. Macom taught seventh grade at the Broad Street School in Salem from 1933 to 1974, when she retired. She then taught first grade in the Vinton Public Schools for four years. During her teaching career, Mrs. Macom was honored as Teacher of the Year for Roanoke County. She was an accomplished artist and was active as a leader and camp director with the Girl Scouts. In 1987 Mrs. Macom moved to Lake Wylie, S.C. to live with her daughter. She was predeceased by her son, Samuel Jackson Macom, who died in 1944. She is survived by her daughter, Helen Sue Macom Hunter, Lake Wylie, S.C.; her sister, Mary Elizabeth White, Salem; her three grandsons, E. Randolph Tucker, Boston, Mass.; John Fleming Tucker, Germantown, Md.; Robert Macom Tucker, Harrisonburg, Va. A memorial service will be held on July 14, 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Salem. Interment at the Sherwood Memorial Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, family members request a donation to the American Cancer Society or the First United Methodist Church, Salem.
