STANDARD & POOR'S LOWERS DEBT RATINGS OF THREE VA. BANKS

Standard & Poor's Corp. said Thursday it has downgraded its ratings of debt issued by three Virginia banking companies.

Placed on the New York company's Creditwatch surveillance list were Central Fidelity, Crestar and Signet banks, all based in Richmond.

"The action reflects S&P's increasing concern about the continuing deterioration in mid-Atlantic real estate markets and the banks' significant exposure to commercial real estate and construction credits in the region," the company said.
