THELMA MACOM, EX-TEACHER, DIES

Thelma Henderson Macom, 91, who taught school for 45 years in Salem and Vinton, died Wednesday near her home in Lake Wylie, S.C.

Macom got her teaching degree while in her 30s, after her husband died in 1930. She moved to Salem and taught seventh grade at the Broad Street School from 1933 to 1974, when she retired.

Macom later came out of retirement and taught for four years in the Vinton school system. She once received Teacher of the Year honors from Roanoke County. She also was an artist and was a leader and camp director with the Girl Scouts.
