WOMAN TURNS HERSELF IN AFTER BOYFRIEND KILLED

A 44-year-old Roanoke woman surrendered to police early Thursday on a charge of shooting her 29-year-old boyfriend to death.

Agnes Marie Basham, of the 800 block of Hunt Avenue Northwest, was charged with murdering William Robert Poindexter, of the 2300 block of Orange Avenue Northwest, after what police described as a "lover's quarrel."

Basham walked into the Police Department about an hour after the 2 a.m. shooting and turned herself in along with the gun used to kill Poindexter, police said.

Poindexter was shot several times in the chest in the 1700 block of Melrose Avenue Northwest.

Police said the two argued in a restaurant and then left together. Moments later, Poindexter was shot to death not far from the restaurant. People inside heard the shots and rushed outside to find Poindexter on the ground and Basham driving off in a car with some other people, police said.

The people she drove off with reportedly did not see the shooting, police said.

Basham was being held on $10,000 bond.
