NEXT YEAR, PEOPLE WILL WIN FLAG BATTLE

AS VIRGINIANS, we can be proud that our entire Virginia congressional delegation, with the one glaring exception of Rick Boucher of Abingdon, voted for a constitutional amendment to protect our flag.

Unlike other states where their congressmen chose to ignore the will of the majority of their constituents, our elected representatives heard the majority and acted accordingly.

But the fight to protect the American flag is not over by a long shot. On a national scale, the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Sons of the American Legion, on behalf of not only their 4.1 million members, but also of all Americans, will continue the campaign to protect our flag. We will work to have legislation proposing a constitutional amendment in the next session of Congress.

And next year the American people will win.

ROGER N. MESSIER\ Commander, The American Legion Department (State) of Virginia RICHMOND
