LATE JUNE BUYERS SURGE TO U.S. AUTOS

Sales of domestically produced cars and light trucks jumped 12.5 percent in late June, surprising analysts and raising hopes among auto executives that the industry had turned a corner after a nine-month slump.

The gains were shared by General Motors Corp., whose vehicle sales rose 17.8 percent, and by Ford Motor Co., with a gain of 4.5 percent. Chrysler Corp.'s sales, however, fell despite aggressive advertising.

Many industry experts were a loss to explain the reasons for the late-June surge.
