TWO MEN CHARGED IN WOUNDING OF OFFICER IN SURRY

Two men were arrested today for the Thursday night shooting of the captain of the Surry County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff W.C. Andrews said Capt. Harold Brown was shot once in the leg while investigating a reported break-in.

According to Andrews, Brown and Deputy Scott Holt were called to an apartment behind the Surry House Restaurant around 11:40 p.m. when a woman staying in the apartment reported someone was trying to break in.

The sheriff said Holt went into the apartment to talk with the woman, while Brown checked outside the building.

"The two suspects were hiding behind some bushes. When Brown shined his light on the bushes, one of them opened fire," he said. Andrews said the suspect fired twice, hitting Brown once in the leg.

Brown fired one shot at the suspects as they fled on foot, the sheriff said, and was able to identify one of the suspects.

Jerry Lee Delk, 18, and Sherman Rawlings, 24, were arrested at their homes early this morning, Andrews said. Both have been charged with breaking and entering and attempted murder, according to the sheriff.
