Kivett landed a 34-pound, 6-ounce striped bass during an early morning outing in the upper Blackwater River arm of the lake. He was using shad for bait while fishing upstream from Magnum Point Marina.
"That's where they have been catching a lot of them," said Lynett Jones, who operates the marina.
At times, as many as 10 to 12 boats of fishermen have been gathering just above the Lake Forest subdivision where stripers have been feeding, Jones said.
Included in the recent catches was a 23-pound, 6-ounce striper landed on a shad by Jimmy Brown of Union Hall.
Other striped bass, taken mostly by bait fishermen, have been weighed recently at Camper's Paradise on the Roanoke River arm of the lake.
While Kivett's striped bass is huge, there have been 10 Smith Mountain catches registered this year with the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries that have weighed 34 1/2 pounds or more.
The season's largest from the lake is a 39-pound, 10-ounce fish landed April 1 by Ricky Baker of Roanoke.
Fishermen at Leesville Lake have been reeling in some 6-to 7-pound largemouth bass.
