POPLAR FOREST OFFICERS ELECTED

The new officers for Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson's Bedford County retreat, include two former Roanokers who now reside in Richmond and two Lynchburg residents.

Douglas Cruickshanks Jr. of Richmond has been elected president of The Corporation for Jefferson's Popular. Mrs. Stuart T. Saunders, a native of Bedford County who now lives in Richmond, is vice president. Peter O. Ward Jr., a Lynchburg attorney, and T. George Washington, publisher of the Lynchburg News & Daily Advance and president of the Virginia Press Association, is treasurer.

The group is trying to raise gifts to match grants from the state and the J. Paul Getty Trust to complete restoration of Poplar Forest and its grounds. More than $2.7 million has been raised toward a goal of $5.5 million.
