FORMER DEAN OF ARCHITECTURE AT TECH DIES

Charles Burchard, founding dean of Virginia Tech's College of Architecture and Urban Studies, died at his home Thursday after a lengthy illness. He was 77

Burchard was a university distinguished professor who directed the establishment and growth of the college from 1964 to 1979.

After he stepped down as dean, he served as campus architect, helping to develop the "infill" approach used to expand university buildings.

Burchard served as president of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture and director of the National Architectural Accrediting Board. He also was a fellow in the American Institute of Architects and served numerous other organizations devoted to architectural education.

He was educated at Massachusetts Institute of Technology abd Harvard University, and he taught at Harvard's Graduate School of Design from 1946-53.

Burchard is survived by his wife, Deborah, of Blacksburg; a daughter, Linda Sue Kahill of New York City; and two sons, Thomas Kirk Burchard of Salinas, Calif., and Peter Burchard of Ellicott City, Md.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the lobby of Cowgill Hall on the Tech campus.
