Arnn, 47, collapsed while playing racquetball at the Dedmon Center about 6 p.m. Thursday with a colleague and his son-in-law.
Susan Lockwood, a spokeswoman at Radford Community Hospital, said Arnn died of sudden intracerebral bleeding, or bleeding into the brain.
Arnn, dean since 1986, had a significant impact on how potential teachers are educated, Radford spokeswoman Deborah Brown said.
During his tenure, the number of student teachers increased from 60 to 300, and the university restructured all of its undergraduate education programs.
"He's going to be sorely missed," said Robert Lockwood, chairman of the educational studies department.
"John Arnn was more than an extraordinarily effective dean," President Donald Dedmon said. "He was a warm human being with an infectious sense of humor. So we have lost both a friend, colleague and an outstanding administrator."
Arnn was assistant dean for the School of Education at Texas Christian University for three years before coming to Radford.
He earned his master's and doctoral degrees at East Texas State University. He taught there and at Texas Christian before coming to Radford.
Arnn is survived by his wife, Pat, and four children. He is a tissue/bone donor.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete.
