Awakens at 6:15 a.m., reads the morning newspaper over breakfast with his family (eating meals together is a family priority), then drives from his home in Countryside Estates to Town Hall.
Arrives at 7:30 to start calls to council members to see if they have questions about the agenda; researches any issues that come up.
Meets with his secretary and the assistant town manager to square up schedules; holds a staff meeting at 9 a.m. with department heads.
Has a business lunch, as he does at least four times a week, meeting with civic, business or university leaders. (On free days, he tries to have a picnic lunch with his wife, Vickye).
Calls the mayor to inform him of all questions raised by other council members.
Calls David Ford, Tech associate vice president for facilities, about the east/west connector proposal through university property; calls Christiansburg Town Manager John Lemley about updates on the Two Town Trolley ridership.
At 3 p.m. attends a dedication of the Natural History Museum on North Main Street with other dignitaries.
Goes home for dinner and at 6:45 catches the first inning of his son's baseball game before dashing back to Town Hall. Coordinates a photo session of council members at 7 p.m. for the town's newsletter.
Sits through a three-hour Town Council session, prepared to answer questions on the Patrick Henry Drive extension issue for which more than 100 citizens have packed Town Hall.
Returns to his office at 10:30 p.m. to wind down; organizes his schedule to make sure he follows up on issues brought up at the meeting.
Arrives home at 11:15 p.m.; reads 40 pages of a mystery novel before falling sleep.
