SUMMER PROGRAMS OFFERED IN BLACKSBURG

The Blacksburg Department of Parks and Recreation is offering four summer outdoor programs the whole family can enjoy.

"Nature: Fun in Your Own Backyard" will be held July 29, 1:30-3 p.m. A fee of $7 per family covers activity supplies and handouts on outdoor fun. Instructor Sarah Sapon-White will focus on nature activities for children. Registration deadline is July 20.

A bike and camping trip is scheduled Friday-Sunday on the scenic - and flat - Greenbriar River trail in West Virginia's Watoga State Park. The $29 fee includes some equipment, transportation and leadership. A meeting is scheduled Monday, 7-8 p.m., at Blacksburg Community Center. Transportation leaves departs 5 p.m. Friday and returns 5 p.m. Sunday. Leader Bob Bush can take a maximum of 10 people. Registration deadline is Monday.

Any neighborhood group or association interested in having a guided bird walk can contact the Recreation Department. Free early morning bird walks, starting at 7 a.m., will be led by Suzie Leslie. All age groups are encouraged to learn about the varieties of birds in their neighborhoods.

PADI Scuba Certification is offered through the New River Valley Scuba Center and is taught by Dianne Wall. Dates are August 7, 9, 14, 21, 23 and 28, 6-10 p.m., with classroom, pool and open water sessions. Requirements include a swimming evaluation and snorkeling gear. The $225 fee includes all instruction, classroom materials and scuba rentals. A $50 deposit is required. There is a maximum of 10 people for the class and registration deadline is July 31.
