DRIVERS DIE IN WYTHEVILLE ACCIDENT

The drivers of two cars were killed in a collision on U.S. 21 Thursday evening when one of the two tried to go around a third car.

The victims were identified as Shirley Kate Brewer, 53, of Speedwell, and Carol Marie Sutherland, 41, of Elk Creek. Both were pronounced dead at the scene about 4 miles south of Wytheville.

Trooper Don Brooks said the northbound Brewer car came up behind a car that was stopped while waiting to make a left turn. He said the Brewer car went around it and collided with the southbound Sutherland car.

The impact knocked the Sutherland vehicle onto its top and into a fourth car waiting at a stop sign on Virginia 652.

Two passengers in the Sutherland car were injured. Viola Edwards of Danville was flown to a hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., and Dale Evans Poe of Independence was flown to one in Bristol, Tenn.

Neither the 17-year-old juvenile in the car waiting to turn left nor Danny Dixon of Wytheville, who was at the stop sign, was hurt.
