Rightly so. How else are we to see how important it is for all of us, be we editors, teachers, principals, school-board members or parents, to be aware of what goes on in the classroom?
Parents should know a child's skills in each grade, and meet with teachers to discuss progress. Teachers should be able to deal with discipline problems so that they can spend more time teaching and less time trying to keep order. The principal should be held responsible if a teacher cannot perform all duty requirements, starting with reading, writing and spelling, and the school board must be responsible so that all people hired can do their jobs.
It's easy to pass the buck, but everyone must shoulder the responsibility of education, and it starts with the parents. My grandmother never spoke English, but my father was to bring his books into the kitchen every day and do all his assignments aloud. She may not have known what he was studying, but she knew he was making the effort.
The editor of The Rockbridge Weekly should be commended for calling this sad state of affairs to our attention. Parents everywhere should pay attention, or be ashamed.
