SKATER'S ATTEMPT AT HISTORY ENDS WITH SPILL

Tonya Harding, who had hoped to become the first U.S. woman to complete a triple Axel in figure-skating competition, fell during her attempt and finished second in the ladies championship of the U.S. Olympic Festival in Minneapolis.

Harding fell three times during her routine and finished second to Nancy Kerrigan of Stoneham, Mass. Tonia Kwiatkowski of Broadview Heights, Ohio, won the bronze medal after entering the long program in fifth place.

Also, archer Rick McKinney of Gilbert, Ariz., tied his national record and came within a point of the world record by shooting a 356 out of a possible 360 in the preliminaries of the 30-meter competition. Hiroshi Matsushita of Japan holds the world record in the event. McKinney tied the national record he had set in 1988 and broke the Olympic Festival record of 353 set in 1987 by Glen Meyers of Fremont, Mich.

In men's basketball, the West overcame injuries to two players and beat the East 117-96 for its first victory of the round-robin competition. On the women's side, the East improved its record to 2-0 with a 64-62 victory over the West (1-1). Tammi Reiss of Virginia led the East with 19 points.
