MONTGOMERY COUNTY CANNERIES TO OPEN

The cannery at Blacksburg Middle School opens July 19 and will operate Tuesdays and Thursdays through September. It will also be open weekly in October and November. Make appointments by calling 552-7917 or 552-2401.

The Auburn Middle and High School cannery at Riner opens July 20 and will operate Wednesdays and Fridays through September. It will also be open weekly in October and November. Make appointments by calling 382-4612 or 382-5160.

A one-time registration fee for the season is required from each family or organization; it is $5 for Montgomery county residents and $10 for non-county residents. Also, there is a 15 cents-per-unit processing charge.

Kettles are available for processing apple butter and sauces. Advisers will be available. Individuals should prepare food for processing at home and bring the needed containers.

The canneries are supported through the Montgomery County budget and are operated by the school system's vocational education service.
