UMW FUNDS DIVERTED TO HEALTH CARE PLAN

The United Mine Workers and a coal operators association have agreed to divert July pension fund payments to prevent the collapse of a miners' health care plan.

The agreement allows the diversion of a projected $4.5 million in pension fund contributions during July.

A 1974 health-care fund, the smaller of two financially troubled UMW health care insurance plans, covers about 13,000 beneficiaries in several states and has been in danger of going into the red this year.

A special commission appointed by Labor Secretary Elizabeth Dole at the end of the Pittston Coal strike is studying ways to rescue the financially distressed union health-care plans.
