EX-SUPERVISOR GETS APPOINTMENT TO AVIATION BOARD

Lee Garrett, a former Roanoke County supervisor, has been appointed to the Virginia Aviation Commission, the policy-making body on aviation and airport matters for the state.

Gov. Douglas Wilder has appointed Garrett, a Democrat, to a four-year term on the eight-member commission, which works closely with the Virginia Department of Aviation.

Garrett said Monday the commission is a "fairly formidable body" that oversees the state's aviation programs and regulations.

"I am very pleased to have been named. I am looking forward to it," he said. Garrett will meet with Maj. Kenneth Rowe, director of the Department of Aviation, later this month for a briefing on the commission's operations.

Garrett is a former vice chairman of the Roanoke Regional Airport Commission, the governing body for the Roanoke airport. He was an original member of the commission formed in 1987 after Roanoke County became a joint owner of the airport, which had been owned and operated by Roanoke for nearly 60 years.

When Garrett left the Board of Supervisors Jan. 1 after he lost a bid for re-election, Supervisors Chairman Dick Robers replaced him on the commission.
