Stewart was selected Monday as the recipient of the 20th Roberto Clemente Award, presented annually to the player who best represents baseball on and off the field.
A native of Oakland, Calif., Stewart has given time and money to schools, the United Way, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Northern California. He also sponsors several youth softball and baseball teams, a girls track team and a dance troupe.
"I give from my heart and most of what I do involves kids," Stewart said. "Kids make me feel like a kid again."
