PULASKI BRAVES GIVE UP BIG INNINGS

The Pulaski Braves went into their Appalachian League doubleheader against third-place Burlington leading the league and sending their two best pitchers to the mound.

By the end of the evening, the two teams had transposed positions in the standings and the Braves' earned run averages had soared.

The Indians' Jim Thome cracked two-run homers in the first inning of both games as Burlington swept Pulaski 11-3 and 9-7 at Calfee Park.

"We went down there and swept them last week, so they were fired up and came out and swung the bats well," said Braves' coach Randy Ingle.

Pulaski erupted for four runs in the first inning of the nightcap, but a six-run fourth inning by Burlington off Pulaski starter and loser Keith Morrison was all the Indians needed.

Morrison entered the game with a perfect record in three starts, a 2.37 ERA and 22 strikeouts.

"We are playing hard and have been playing well," said Ingle, who saw his team fall to 13-6. "Tonight Burlington played really well."

After Thome's home run in the first, Pulaski rapped four singles around three walks off Burlington started Dickie Brown to go up 4-2.

The Indians jumped on Braves' pitcher Brett Grebe for five first-inning runs to post the win in the opener.

"Grebe was getting the ball up in the first inning, and when that happens, you're going to get hit," Ingle said. "Their first six batters got hits and that made it tough. We did get some runs at the end. But it's one of those things."

Grebe started the evening with a 2-1 record, a 1.42 ERA and 15 strikeouts.

Thome hit a two-run shot in the first inning and added an RBI single to lead a 14-hit barrage for Burlington.

The Indians led 8-0 before Pulaski finally scratched on Pat Dando's fourth home run of the year.

The Appalachian League will take tonight off for the major league All-Star Game and the Braves will return to action Wednesday at Calfee against Johnson City.

"You don't get many nights off in this game, so we will take tomorrow to relax," Ingle said.
