BULLS' DOMINANCE OF BUCS CONTINUES

The Durham Bulls continued their mastery of the Salem Buccaneers with a 6-1 victory Monday night in Carolina League baseball.

Stan Fansler (0-5) took the brunt of Durham's bullish attack, giving up five runs on eight hits and three walks in four innings. Fansler threw 31 pitches in the first inning and 91 in four as the Bulls rushed to a 5-0 lead.

In the first inning, Kevin Castleberry hit a one-out double to center. Theron Todd followed with a single to right, and Castleberry held at third and Todd took second on Chris Estep's throw to the plate.

Brian Champion, who drove in three runs, knocked in his first of the evening with a sacrifice fly that scored Castleberry.

Ryan Klesko drew a walk, and Johnny Cuevas, who entered the game hitting .225, singled to center to score Todd and Klesko.

It was more of the same in the second inning.

Ken Harring started the rally with a double to left and Popeye Cole drew a walk. After Castleberry struck out, Todd singled to right to load the bases. Champion knocked in his final two runs by lining a single to left.

Durham's Roger Hailey (1-1) retired the first nine Bucs he faced before Greg Sims led off the fourth inning with a triple. Sims scored Salem's lone run on Bruce Schreber's sacrifice fly. The Bucs didn't get another hit until the seventh inning and finished with three.

Durham has beaten Salem 11 of the 12 times they have met this season.
