Barry Franklin Heslep, 31, of Mount Tabor Road, is charged with malicious wounding and using a firearm to commit a felony. Heslep, a maintenance worker and repairman at Virginia Tech, was arrested Monday morning.
The shooting happened June 23 in the parking lot of Huckleberry Inn on Radford Road.
About 12:30 that Saturday morning, Donald Whitlock, 28, of Christiansburg, was shot twice - once in the left thigh and once in the left shoulder.
Whitlock was being treated at Montgomery Regional Hospital and was listed Monday in satisfactory condition, a nursing supervisor said.
The shooting apparently started with an argument in the restaurant's bar, said Christiansburg Lt. Doug Marrs.
Whitlock had been standing at the bar near two other people when a man started cursing and yelling racial slurs and punched a man standing near Whitlock, according to witnesses, Marrs said.
The man then left the bar, followed by Whitlock. An argument continued in the parking lot and ended with Whitlock being shot. The man then fled in his car.
Marrs said they obtained a warrant to arrest Heslep after interviewing witnesses who were at the bar that night and after "we got a lead through an informant."
Heslep was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $15,000 cash bond or a $30,000 property bond.
He was scheduled to be arraigned this morning. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for later this month in Montgomery County General District Court in Christiansburg.
