FOLLOW THROUGH ON ENVIRONMENT

NOW THAT Earth Day 1990 has passed, I wonder just how many individuals and businesses have returned to their normal environmentally destructive patterns?

A lot of us have good intent, but following through is a different matter. I feel that to have an impact on the environmental situation, we need consistent support by individuals and, more importantly, big business.

More individuals need to get involved. That means learning what we can do to help the current situation and help prevent it from recurring.

I also feel the business community needs to take a leadership role in recycling. The workplace is where a lot of our waste is generated. Think about the amounts of recyclable products, including paper and paper byproducts, used by even the smallest operation on a daily basis. Now imagine the positive benefits for the environment if these products were recycled while recycled products were bought in their place!

I think if the business world makes a legitimate effort to educate and involve its employees in the recycling process, the effect could carry over in the home. Once we all realize that our jobs and the Earth are entwined, we can understand the necessity to protect the Earth before it's too late.
