The airborne fly swatter is a specially equipped, 38-ton C-130 Hercules aircraft. It will make low-level evening bombing runs on the Peninsula's pesky mosquitoes this week.
Wednesday and Thursday, the four-engine, turboprop Hercules from Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base in Ohio will dump powerful insecticide over Langley Air Force Base and nearby communities.
"It's something we've done almost every year here," said Sgt. Dana Flores, a spokeswoman for Langley. "The mosquitoes out here are atrocious, and I have the marks on my legs to prove it."
Most area residents are grateful for the strafings, Flores said. "They keep asking when we're going to do it again." City governments cooperate in the effort, Flores said.
This is will be the first spraying of the year.
