14 FIREFIGHTERS HURT BATTLING BLAZE

An electrical short-circuit caused a fire that heavily damaged a Woodbridge apartment complex, injured 14 firefighters and displaced 21 families, the Prince William County fire marshal's office says.

Assistant Fire Chief Robert Sharpe said damage in Monday's fire is estimated at $500,000.

Capt. Jerry Shephard of the Prince William Fire Department was admitted to Potomac Hospital with burns and heat exhaustion, Sharpe said. Pat Sears, nursing supervisor at the hospital, said Shephard was in fair condition Monday night.

The other 13 firefighters were treated and released, Sears said. Most suffered heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation, but one injured a shoulder and two were treated for lacerations.
