MCMAHON SIGNS DEAL WITH EAGLES

Jim McMahon, the flamboyant and controversial quarterback who led the Chicago Bears to victory in Super Bowl XX, agreed to a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday.

Eagles coach Buddy Ryan, who was the Bears' defensive coordinator in 1986 when they won the Super Bowl, said McMahon will back up Randall Cunningham.

Ryan said McMahon, 30, is ready to accept that role.

"We have no problems," the coach said. "He wants to be an Eagle."

The move will not affect Cunningham.

"Randall doesn't need to be motivated. He's going to take us to the Super Bowl," Ryan said. "He's our quarterback."

McMahon's agent, Steve Zucker, said his client is eager to play for Philadelphia.

"It's a terrific situation," Zucker said. "He's very excited about getting back with Buddy Ryan."

In August 1989, the Bears traded McMahon to San Diego. He started 11 games for the Chargers, including a 20-17 victory over the Eagles. He became a free agent after the season.

"Jim McMahon is probably a better quarterback than half of the quarterbacks in the NFL," Ryan said.
