NATION'S FIRST BLACK ARCHBISHOP RESIGNS

The nation's first black Roman Catholic archbishop resigned Tuesday because of health problems.

Archbishop Eugene A. Marino, 56, had temporarily stepped down as head of the Atlanta Archdiocese in May because of severe stress and a near heart attack.

"The Church of Atlanta needs a shepherd . . . who is healthy," Marino said in a statement.

Auxiliary Bishop James P. Lyke, 51, of Cleveland, was appointed apostolic administrator. A native of Chicago, Lyke is a Franciscan priest.

Lyke, who also is black, declined to speculate on whether he would be named archbishop.
