ANTI-KLAN COALITION PLANS TO REACTIVATE

After five years of inactivity, a Roanoke Valley group organized to oppose Ku Klux Klan activity is attempting to reactivate.

Roanoke Valley Together was created in 1981 as a coalition of individuals and organizations responding to a Klan march and recruiting drive. Its stated goal was to maintain "good racial and religious relations within the Roanoke area."

Recent incidents such as allegedly racially motivated rock throwing, the painting of a swastika on Temple Emanuel, and the distribution of skinhead promotional material at a Roanoke mall all contributed to the decision to reactivate, said Burt Levine, a spokesman for some of the former officers and board members who are attempting the reorganization.

An open meeting to discuss reactivating the coalition will be held Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the Buckskin Room of the Crystal Tower building on Campbell Avenue Southwest.
