At the Wildlife Center of Virginia in Weyers Cave, Clark, one of the state's best-known environmentalists, has helped save thousands of injured animals - many of them endangered species - that are picked up and brought to him by people who recognize that the lowliest of creatures has a unique place in nature's scheme.
The makeshift center, which consists of a couple of trailers and a lot of cages and pens, has been busting at the seams. The more Virginians learn of Clark's work, the more "patients" he gets. In one day last month the center took in 39 animals .
Recently the center had some good news. After many months of looking unsuccessfully for a new home, it received a donation of eight acres worth $80,000 from E. I. Du Pont de Nemours & Co., which has a fibers plant in Waynesboro.
That gift will allow for construction of a new wildlife center, which will be one of the most sophisticated veterinary facilities of its type in the country.
If the voices of the wilderness could be heard they, no doubt, would be cheering.
