3 INJURED IN BLAST AT LYNCHBURG PLANT

One man was in critical condition and two others were badly burned when cleaning fluid ignited at an Exxon Chemical Co. plant.

The explosion Tuesday occurred as the three Lynchburg men stripped paint in a poorly ventilated bathroom, fire officials said.

David Campbell, 53, was in critical condition today at the University of Virginia Hospital Burn Center, a hospital spokesman said. Dennis Hancock, 26, was in serious condition at the UVa Burn Center and Dennis Walker, 39, was listed in fair condition at Lynchburg General Hospital.

A sprinkler system in the building quelled flames from the flash explosion and likely saved the men's lives, Lynchburg Fire Department Cmdr. P.G. Scott said.

Exxon bought the building last month and is renovating it to build plastic automobile components. - Associated Press
