Waltrip, who is recovering more quickly than expected from injuries suffered Friday in a crash during practice at Daytona International Speedway, will drive the first lap at Pocono, then relinquish the steering wheel to Horton. By starting the race, Waltrip will be credited with any Winston Cup points that Horton earns.
Horton, a four-time winner this season on the ARCA tour, filled in for Waltrip on Saturday in the Pepsi 400 at Daytona. Despite being involved in a 23-car accident on the second lap of the race, Horton finished a creditable 17th.
Waltrip, who underwent surgery for a fractured left leg and also was treated for a fractured left elbow, was out of bed and getting around Daytona's Halifax Medical Center with the aid of a walker on Wednesday. His wife, Stevie, said the 43-year-old driver was in good spirits.
Waltrip's car owner, Rick Hendrick, and his crew chief, Jeff Hammond, said Tuesday night that Waltrip hopes to go without a relief driver in the DieHard 500 on July 29 at Talladega, Ala.
